How can the President be so far off with his own party on this? I think it's probably a combination of things the lack of plan on the Presidents part and the realization that these are dangerous people, many of which were picked up on the battlefield. We need to do something with them, charges and trials. But we can't just close the prison and bring them to the US.

I think you hit the nail on the head with the fact he used the left to get elected and is now running to the center.
He was left during the Primaries and moved to the center during the General. It's campaigning 101. Generals are won by moderates.
Everyone turned their back on the President because those in congress have to get re-elected and they don't want them in their district. We keep mass murderers and trained killers in our prisons now, wtf is the difference. When is the last time a prisoner escaped in modern technological prisons. Not happening. There is no difference between hardcore American gangs that populate prisons and terrorists. They both kill innocent people. Those gangs will most likely kill them anyways which will give the right a boner.
The right needs to stop watching "24" and jerking off to torture videos.
My solution is to just keep the prisoners in military bases and complexes in America. Area 51 anyone lol!
