Clinton puzzled at Pakistan failure to find al Qaeda
Thu Oct 29 14:22:05 UTC 2009

By Andrew Quinn

LAHORE, Pakistan (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's said on Thursday it was "hard to believe" that no one in Pakistan's government knew where al Qaeda leaders were hiding, striking a new tone on a trip where Washington's credibility has come under attack.

Scores of al Qaeda leaders and their operatives, including Osama bin Laden, are believed to be in hiding in the rugged border territory that divides Pakistan and Afghanistan, but both countries routinely accuse the other of being the main sanctuary

"I find it hard to believe that nobody in your government knows where they are and couldn't get them if they really wanted to," she told a group of newspaper editors during a meeting in Lahore.

"Maybe they are not 'get-at-able'. I don't know," she said.

Clinton's pointed remark was the first public gripe on a trip aimed at turning around a U.S.-Pakistan relationship under serious strain, but bound in the struggle against religious extremism.

"I am more than willing to hear every complaint about the United States," Clinton said, ""but this is a two way street.

"If we are going to have a mature partnership where we work together" then "there are issues that not just the United States but others have with your government and with your military security establishment."

Clinton, who has sought to use her own personal outreach to overcome rising anti-American sentiment in Pakistan, earlier repeated her conviction that the two countries' common interests far outweighed their differences.

"I am well aware that there is a trust deficit," Clinton told students at a "townhall-style" meeting at Government College University in Lahore.

"My message is that's not the way it should be. We cannot let a minority of people in both countries determine our relationship."

Clinton's arrival in Pakistan on Wednesday was overshadowed by a car bomb blast that ripped through a market in the city of Peshawar, killing more than 100 people, in one of the largest recent attacks by Islamic militants seeking to destabilize the nuclear-armed country.

Clinton urged Pakistan's youth to stand firm against the forces of religious extremism, saying it threatened everything that both Americans and Pakistanis hold dear.

She carried the same message in her meetings with Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and other high officials in Islamabad on Wednesday.

Clinton was due to meet Pakistan's army and security chiefs on Thursday, where she was expected to discuss Pakistan's latest military campaign against extremists in South Waziristan as well as the U.S.-led war against Taliban religious militants in neighboring Afghanistan.

PERSONAL AFFINITY

U.S. officials have cast Clinton's visit to Pakistan as a chance to counter anti-American broadsides from extremist religious leaders and to showcase Clinton's personal affinity for a country she says she knows and loves deeply.

On Thursday, she toured the massive red sandstone Badshahi Mosque in central Lahore, extolling the cultural achievements of a country more often in the headlines for political and religious strife.

But the tense security situation in Pakistan was clear. Gunmen stood guard in the mosque minarets, while Lahore's normally busy main streets were emptied and armed police kept bystanders penned back in narrow alleyways as Clinton's motorcade sped past.

While acknowledging the many bumps in U.S.-Pakistan relations, Clinton nevertheless asked for understanding, patience and commitment, saying her own experience in deciding to join the Obama administration after running against Barack Obama for the presidency was instructive.

"What we have together is far greater than what divided us," Clinton told the students, referring to her relations with Obama. "And that is what I feel about the United States and Pakistan."

That is war. These were soldiers who died in Afghanistan not Iraq. It is much more tragic those who return from Iraq because they went there for reasons that turned out not to be true.

These soldiers are fighting a war that needs to be fought. If you want to stop seeing the caskets come home then the answer is not stop sending troops but to allow the troops to do their jobs. Use necessary force and follow the opposition where ever it may lead them. These people who we are fighting are not fighting for a country or under the rules of warfare. They play by their own rules and once we accept that innocent people will be caught in the middle and sometimes will die we will be better off. The opposition uses humans as shields and uses the cover of villages and the local people to avoid our military.

The way this article is written it tries to outline the deaths as if these weren't soldiers who volunteered to fight for our country. It is almost like these soldiers died for no reason. It couldn't be farther from the truth these are the soldiers we sent to defeat the Taliban and hunt Bin Laden, these soldiers died defending our country.

Re: [Random Political Thoughts and News] Re: [Random Political Thoughts and News]...

I am finding it hard to follow what you are saying completely because on the one hand you say that the government is the problem because they have their hands in the pockets of big business and on the other hand they are the solution with bailouts.  I think we both agree that the government is the problem we just disagree on the solution.  Even with a representative democracy, which I agree we are totally not one, you have limits to how much power you truly have.  But as a consumer we have all of the power.  The government can prop up these businesses all it wants the only way recovery will happen is if the consumer allows it.  Anyway thanks for the back and forth on this one!!!

I was merely defending the necessity of a bailout.  Back then Herbert Hoover let all the banks that crash go under.  Back then our economy wasn't even globalized yet so if that happened today it be much worse than the great depression.

My opinion is that currently nothing will get done correctly because we don't have a representative democracy anymore.  Our public servants are in the pockets of big business.  So when it comes to the economy the status quo is the only way to do things.  Obama saying he "will" cut executives pay that haven't paid back tarp money, that's funny, won't happen.  There was a supreme court case back in the early 19th century where in the case they were determining if a corporation can be considered an individual.  Back then corporations weren't allowed to interfere with governmental policy because only the individuals could be represented.  Mainly it was about donations and campaign contributions.  Corporations weren't allowed to donate or contribute to political causes.  In the end the Supreme Court decided that corporations can be considered a individual.  Now we have 6 lobbyists for 1 member in congress.  Thousands of different special interest groups funded and backed secretly by corporations.  Massive campaign spending from donations from some of the biggest corporations in the world.

Yeah but the great depression wasn't left to correct itself, a great deal of the bullshit government controlled socialism we put up with in this country was born then.  We call the shots not government and not business.  You don't like the way a company does business don't do business with them.  I don't see how you can justify the governments actions when you are clearly saying they are more corrupt then the businesses.

I am not saying that the practices out there by all of our businesses are good practices.  But I am not going to side with government especially because of the things you have said.  They are in bed together and I think that is more disturbing than a company paying executives millions of dollars.  We don't allow the free market to function properly.  If we were smart enough we would look at these banks that have received bailout money and take action ourselves.  We don't need the government to do it.  Running businesses is not a function of government and should never happen.  Why do we give our power away?  You don't like these banks then pull your money out and don't do business with them or anyone who does business with them.  Then free market!!!  We decide, not government they are too corrupt.

I am far from a tea bagger!!!  And the problem with allowing a little bit of something is that they will pursue more.

Problem is that the banks are calling the shots not the Government.  Obama has done very little to regulate anything yet because the banks own "us."  Who do you think wanted those lending practices?  The Banks.  Why?  They make a shitload more money.  Incoming campaign contributions…..

You know what happens when you do nothing, ask Herbert Hoover.  Boom…..Great Depression.  He is a perfect example of libertarian philosophy.

The so called regulators are mostly made up of former bank executives and friends of the banks.  There is zero real regulation.  Obama has done jack shit when it comes to regulating anything.  How is cutting bonuses of executives of banks that were given a lifeline from our tax dollars a bullshit act.  When they aren't using "our" money they can do what they like with it.  That's like lending a desperate friend money and then they go to Vegas with it.  Let's remember it was George Bush and Paulson who authorized the bank bailout.  And yes Obama voted for it.  So did the majority of congress because they are on the Banks payroll.

I completely understand the ramifications and know exactly what would happen.  I also know that if there are real consequences then some, not all but some of the "human nature" activities would be corrected.  There is a very fine line with regulation and control and frankly I don't like a bunch of ass wipe politicians calling all of the shots.  The Obama administration has gone way beyond "regulation" they are running the most powerful banks in America and not to mention two of the three biggest automobile manufacturers.  This is not regulation.  There are good and bad to all economic systems I agree.  But I also think that we have as a country never truly allowed our economy to fix itself.  Bandaids and bailouts are not a part of the equation and are far from regulation.

And why didn't the regulators and the wonderful regulations catch a guy like Madoff?  You know what caught him?  It was the market.  Regulation failed and when the market started to fall he was exposed.  More regulation is not the answer.  We won't ever truly know if the market will correct itself because we are too afraid to allow it to happen.

I think this all started with 9/11, remember the markets crashed everyone Republicans and Democrats rushed to find a vehicle to keep the economy going.  There was a bandaid bailout and horrible lending practices encouraged.  We didn't feel it as hard as we are now because shady practices were encouraged. It took years to see people who couldn't afford the houses they bought were losing there houses and by the time we got to where we are now the snowball was too big and had spread across the economy.

This is the problem with Libertarians.  They believe there are no consequences to their utopia of a Free Market.  Every economic system has downfalls.  They want a system with no rules or restrictions.  That's like having society having no rules, this leads to anarchy.  They don't take into account human nature and realize people aren't always nice and good.  We need rules to keep things in order.

Re: [Random Political Thoughts and News] Re: [Random Political Thoughts and News]...

You need to understand the financial power these banks have on our economy.  If a monster bank fails it takes down our entire financial network.  It's a domino effect.  BANKS ARE OUR ECONOMY.  I don't like it but it is how it is.  Just imagine what would happen to our country if 4 of the largest banks in the world collapsed and were no more.  Mass unemployment(you think close to 10% is bad), world economy crumbles, business after business can't get loans and fail also, retirement funds destroyed, two tier class system of rich and poor.  The entire world economy rests on banks as their support.

I don't like bailouts, frankly they piss me off.  I also realize the ramifications of letting them go under.  If regulation and the government is the problem why do you think before the collapse, majority of fortune 500 companies were making record yearly profits for the past two decades.  Was this because strict government regulation and intervention?  It was because our system was being systematically dismantled of regulation from the Great Depression era by Democrats and Republicans for the past 70 years.  The power of money buys votes.

The problem isn't free market capalism.  The problem is the government.  There is no such thing as too big to fail.  We are allowing that to be the disadvantage.  The only reason they expect a bailout is because the government has bailed them out.  If you don't have drugs you don't have a drug addict.  Don't bail them out, if they fail then they fail.  It would be a huge hit to the economy but we are creating a far worse problem by bailing them out.  One of the advantages of a free market is its ability to correct itself.  We should have allowed them to fail.  If you are taking risks that aren't wise you lose.  If you are building cars people don't want you lose, that is a free market.  We haven't allowed the free market to work properly by ridding itself of posionous companies.  If they fail other companies and future companies will learn and correct the issues that caused the failure.

This guy the same guy who "Bitterly, the Democrats seated Burris. But when it came out that Burris had admitted what he had denied under oath â€" that he'd unsuccessfully tried to raise money for Blagojevich â€" Majority Whip Richard Durbin, D-Ill., suggested that Burris resign. He refused." wants a public option, come on that should tell you something. Why would we give people like him the power to decide if the government will control a portion of health care? It started with Bush's bailout before he left office and has opened the door for democrats to try and take as much control out of the private free market sector and turn it into a blend of public and private with much of the "too big" to fail group under government control. What has happened? When did people want the federal government to expand its control?

Now don't misinterpret what I said. All of this isn't Bush's fault. But he did swing the door wide open before he left office. He should have left it alone. The beautiful thing about a free market is those who cheat generally lose. But not when the government decides who is not going to lose even if they cheated. Bailouts and government take overs are the opposite of a free market and we need to decide once and for all are we going to stay a free market or not.

And he is one of these whack jobs who just talked at great length to the UN about the very subject of global warming. It might be why he can't and won't be able to get China on board with cutting their emissions.

Not only is he a hypocrite he is an arrogant one. Just because you the almighty Barrack Obama president of the US fly out and talk about how much Chicago is deserving of hosting the Olympics doesn't mean all of the sudden it will happen. This is exactly what I have been saying about Joe. Joe Scarborough for President has a nice ring to it. And even on the left wing nut show that is the Huffington Post they too realize that he would be a good, strong candidate. But as is mentioned in the story, it has increasingly become a popularity contest with people who in the past would get laughed at for thinking of running. Like Obama and Palin and not for the reasons the left like to try and use. Its because they are not experienced enough!!! Not because he is black and she is a woman, come lets be real about this, experience has to play more of a role in developing a strong country and leader. My man Joe Scarborough, as very well laid out in this article has more than enough experience in all of the key areas to lead. I said it before Joe Scarborough in 2012. He could save the GOP. I wish more people would hop on board and get behind him and stop giving Palin their support. Its a long time to 2012 maybe we can get this going.
